"We are each other's shelter from the storm."
SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #6

One day I walked into a library and my eyes fell on a book called Kingdom Come. I picked it up and to my surprise it was a comic book...or rather as I later learned, a graphic novel. But I saw beautifully painted panels and heroes that I recognized from my childhood who seemed ...well, grown up. I borrowed that book and I was moved and fascinated by, not only the story of men and women who are great heroes, but by they way they showed their humanity. They suddenly were not two dimensional people who just fought bad guys. They were deeply complex. I love books and reading on the whole and I guess getting into the comic genre as an adult woman was a case of serendipity. It led me to finding DC comics and the heroes I grew up with on TV and saw in movies and newsprint. It led me to finding Clark Kent or as he is known by his other name, Kal-El, and Princess Diana. I fell in love with them and am obsessed with all things Amazonian and Kryptonian now. I love their relationship. I love what they stand for. I love the contrasts of the princess/farmer's son; reporter/ambassador; pragmatic warrior/idealistic protector and empathetic teacher/enforcer of justice. A girl born of the earth and a boy who fell from the sky. The first daughter of Themyscira and last son of Krypton. And it surprised me to find that there were many fans like me, who adore them too.

DC rebooted their universe in 2011 and my favorite pairing is now canon!!! Yay.

Batman Brave and The Bold,Triumvirate of Terror

This is a very awesome episode featuring the Trinity facing their foes, Luthor, Joker and Cheetah. There is a little twist in that they change dance partners and we see Joker take on Wonder Woman, Luthor take on Batman and Cheetah take on Superman. It was a fun episode and each hero had a good showing. The show is a love letter to the Golden and Silver Age of comics and has many shout-outs to even the modern era. BBATB Superman is clever, confident, fun and has a streak of unabashed mischief in him that I feel is missing from modern day Superman. Wonder Woman has her invisible plane, Steve Trevor, and her pre Crisis power levels. Steve always seemed to be tied up, watching Diana save the day. The best for us shippers was the homage to Kingdom Come at  the end. We get to see Clark,Diana and Bruce 50 years into the future. We see elderly Batman wearing the famous Kingdom Come exoskeleton, and battle armor. Clark and Diana have touches of gray in their hair but are still vibrant with a lot of longevity left in them.

Stolen Legacy excerpt

"You know, you kind of cheated, Diana!"

"How did I cheat, Kal?"

They were floating back to the house, both looking disheveled and still somewhat sodden. But that did not worry either of them. They both felt invigorated and upbeat. The little battle had done them both good and sent the blood pumping in their veins. They were grinning like children.

"You used diversionary tactics that I could not defend myself against."

"They are part of my abilities. You used heat vision which melts snow. That was not fair."

"You could still neutralize my heat vision with the ice. I could not do anything about those birds without hurting or traumatizing them. You knew that. It's sneaky."

"Putting snow down my neck is sneaky, Kal." She jabbed his shoulder.

"Hey, I used the allowed medium. So, I didn't ball it up. It's still allowed within the perimeters of snowball fights. Besides, we can't have you finding loopholes alone," he teased.

They were now on the porch and he opened the door.
Diana put her hand on her hip. "Kal, the day I cheat or use diversionary tactics on you in a battle, you will know. And I doubt you would even be able to do anything about it."

His brow quirked. "Oh, yeah?"

"Yes."

"Never make promises you can't keep, Princess."

She elbowed him for that from the back as they crossed the threshold. "So, you think I cannot do what I say?"

"I think you can. With magic and your animal empathy. I just think you can't be subtle about it."

"Care to bet on that?" They were both on the corridor now and hanging their jackets on the hooks.

"Bet? Oh, you want to bet? Well, I don't know. What stakes have you to tempt me?"

She slipped off her gloves and crinkled her nose. "We could have a game of chess. Loser does something he or she despises."

He rubbed his chin. "Sounds interesting. I'm in if you let Nick kiss you again."

"Kal!" She slapped his arm with her gloves.

"Hey, that's assault, you know."

She leaned against the wall and gasped, "I t- thought he was going to take the mistletoe down and… offer me the berries as a s-snack." She broke into a fit of laughter. "I did not understand why we needed to e-eat such a weed and why he was looking so h-happy. I thought maybe it was some kind of …delicacy…"

Clark chuckled and he looked own at her. She was glowing and radiant. He never saw her as happy as she was now and there was such an openness to her that was so compelling and disarming.

"You are beautiful when you smile."

Sapphire eyes met cerulean ones and her laughter slowly died. Her color seemed to fluctuate. She was looking at him with a strange expression in her eyes. As if making a new discovery and sensing an awareness and tension in them both. Her gaze dropped to his mouth.Clark felt his breath hitch. She was close. Close enough that he could smell her glorious scent. He only had to lean in a fraction to be closer.

Words replayed in his head.

Live a little, Clark. Be reckless. Be selfish.

Diana's lips parted and the sudden thought that rushed into her head made her blush. What would it be like to feel Kal's lips against her own?

Superman and Wonder Woman JLA

I have not been lucky to get any access to these books. DC, it would be nice if you decided to do do some back issues for us in a trade format. But I have managed to get some nice images thanks to countryboylife to show that in the 1970ties Superman and Wonder Woman had that special bond as allies and friends and the underlying sexual tension has always been there.

JLA #176 Ready Princess?

What a team

Joining forces

She calls him Kal even way back then

Hera NO!

A Job For Wonder Woman

JLA #143 A Tale of Two Satellites

Diana is possessed and fights Superman in this issue. Yeah, the old Superman vs Wonder Woman plot never gets old. No fan can resist it even if you know the story is about them being coerced.

Diana is possessed

She battles Superman

She nabs him in the lasso but the League will come to the rescue

Diana is comforted in Superman's arms when the dust settles and for us shippers that's our panel of the issue.

Wonder Woman #222

Diana completes her Twelve Labors and is welcomed back to the JLA.

Young Justice

So they have not given us anything much with the adults and Wonder Woman. The pilot "Independence Day" had a brief but telling interaction with her and Superman. I imagine she is the one telling him to go on and meet the clone, Superboy. Look at her smile after him as he walks away.

SuperGrandma

Our hero play with her Superman and Wonder Woman action figures

One in a series of funny and inspirational photographs by French photographer, Sacha Goldberger, of his 91-year-old Hungarian grandmother, Frederika. She was feeling lonely and depressed and to cheer her up, he suggested that they shoot a series of photos dressed as a superhero. Suffice to say it was a hit with her and inspired numerous people around the world. The photographs can be seen here.Grandma’s Superhero Therapy

Wonder Woman #212

Diana sets herself Twelve Labors to prove to herself she is worthy of being a member of the JLA and much of the story is narrated by Superman.

Diana meets up with him as Clark Kent. He had last seen her when she was just a normal human woman trained in the martial arts. (I-Ching era) Diana does not recall any of this. Clark has to remind her that she had lost her powers. Sensing something was wrong, he tells her to change into Wonder Woman and  meet him at the JLA Headquarters.

Superman arrives at Headquarters and Diana is not there. Instinctively he knows where to find her. She is at the old JLA base and she appears confused and distraught. Superman comforts her and assures her that they will find out what's wrong with her.

Back at the JLA headquaters the League are trying to decide what to do about Diana. Batman cannot find anything wrong with her memory but it just seems she cannot recall the last few months. Diana is not happy with this explanation. She demands to know about this part of her life. Superman tries to reassure her than now she was back with the JLA that they would get to the bottom of the mystery. But does not think she deserves to be part of the team.

She insists she will rejoin only after she feels she is worthy. She will undergo twelve tasks. Much like the twelve labors of Hercules. She requests the JLA monitor her and if she succeeds she will rejoin.

The JLA nominates Superman as the first one to monitor Diana and at first he is not keen because he feels he can't be objective. It's clear Superman has softer feelings for Diana, just by the way deals with her. But the League feels he is professional enough not to let them cloud his judgement. He follows Diana as she visits Paradise Island and we find out that the Amazons had somehow been responsible for her lost memories and that Steve Trevor was dead. Vulnerable and grieving Diana encounters a villain called the Cavalier who tries to control her with his hypnotic powers. Before Superman could intervene, Diana demonstrates she does not need anyone rescuing her. She can look after herself. She is a superhero after all.

Superman's faith in Diana is rewarded and he is happy to report to his JLA allies that she passed her first trial.

Superman's Girlfriend Lois Lane # 136

So here is another Lois title with her insecure and jealous of Wonder Woman. The set up is that in order to save Lois from an enemy of Superman, Superman and Wonder Woman must convince Lois and the foe that they are in love.

We have Lois spying and crying and, of course, it is an excuse for DC to tease some Super/Wonder smooching.

Of course in the end Lois finds out they only did it to save her and Lois actually gets to save Wonder Woman. And then she gets to go reunite with Superman. She's a lucky girl? Yeah, and Superman is lucky he has a good friend like Diana to even do this for him.
