"We are each other's shelter from the storm."
SUPERMAN/WONDER WOMAN #6

One day I walked into a library and my eyes fell on a book called Kingdom Come. I picked it up and to my surprise it was a comic book...or rather as I later learned, a graphic novel. But I saw beautifully painted panels and heroes that I recognized from my childhood who seemed ...well, grown up. I borrowed that book and I was moved and fascinated by, not only the story of men and women who are great heroes, but by they way they showed their humanity. They suddenly were not two dimensional people who just fought bad guys. They were deeply complex. I love books and reading on the whole and I guess getting into the comic genre as an adult woman was a case of serendipity. It led me to finding DC comics and the heroes I grew up with on TV and saw in movies and newsprint. It led me to finding Clark Kent or as he is known by his other name, Kal-El, and Princess Diana. I fell in love with them and am obsessed with all things Amazonian and Kryptonian now. I love their relationship. I love what they stand for. I love the contrasts of the princess/farmer's son; reporter/ambassador; pragmatic warrior/idealistic protector and empathetic teacher/enforcer of justice. A girl born of the earth and a boy who fell from the sky. The first daughter of Themyscira and last son of Krypton. And it surprised me to find that there were many fans like me, who adore them too.

DC rebooted their universe in 2011 and my favorite pairing is now canon!!! Yay.

Superman #11 Review

In this filler issue, Superman follows up the Russian submarine to a facilty to  find that there was something deadly and dangerous in it and Clark Kent has a double date. No kidding.

Clark meets Jonathan Carroll, Lois' current squeeze, and turns out he's an okay guy. Lois has also set him up with her sister. Seems DC's imagination is very limited when it comes to a love interest for Superman. Waiting for them to give us a woman who can offer something different really. So far LL seems the criteria. Anyway, Clark apparently has a good time until he is called away two pages later.

Seeing the suit in action was my favorite part of this whole issue. And after pages of waffling we find out who was in the capsule.

Yeah, it's the Predator. Seriously, what the...?

I suppose this book is just trying to hang on until the next creative team take over. There has been no coherent direction or clear plan in it since issue number one. Jurgens' Clark isn't too bad persona wise but it is a really dull book to read.

2.5 stars out of 5

Best Panel: I don't really likes Jurgens style for new 52 Superman but he proves now and again he can draw a handsome face.

Justice League #11 Review

Graves continue to manipulate the League's minds and torture them with memories of people they lost. When they gather their wits about them they find out that Graves used the teleporters to go to Tracey Trevor's house. He torments her over what he did to Steve.

Understandably Tracy is pissed and upset over her brother but boy, what a bitch to Diana. We know Diana is only 23. She came out when she was 18 and we know she was very naive. And this woman is hurling some unfair stuff at her in my opinion. Did she ever once ask her brother what he was doing with a young woman who, while wise in many things, would be naive as a teenager when dating? Color me not very sympathetic really to anyone here but Diana. Crush his self worth my foot. I hope this is just Graves' manipulative effect on her.

Diana is guilt ridden and wants to go and cut off Graves' head and bring Steve home. The team tries to stop her from doing it alone and tell her they will help. She does not want to wait and hear them out or she simply is not in a frame of mind to understand. Graves' effect maybe? If not it is weird for her to be behaving like this with men she worked alongside for five years.

Hal makes the mistake of trying to contain her and tell her what to do. She gets pissed and they begin to fight. They damage property and Superman, while trying to stop Diana from acting rashly, gets a kick in the face for his effort. This is what Graves wants. The whole world sees the League acting like brawling hooligans. Batman tries to regain control of the situation and gets Cyborg to boomtube them out of the area to Graves' work cabin.

Aquaman has had enough and steps in and puts Hal and Diana in their place. Diana has the grace to feel ashamed for kicking Superman and tries to apologize to him. He deals with her in a way that mystifies Hal but Barry gets it. The team locates Graves' location and goes to Mount Sumeru, the Valley of Souls. There the League come across once more loved ones who have died. Cyborg sees himself. Diana sees Steve who tells her she is too late.

I give this 3.5. It was entertaining enough but still not feeling a real threat from Graves and waiting for something better from the the members. The fighting after being together for five years is odd. While I don't expect them to be best buddies, this is a very chaotic team. No one is in charge and they all don't seem to care much for each other save one or two of the relationships Geoff made the effort to expand on like Barry/Hal and Clark/Bruce. Diana is still way too much defined as Steve's ex in everything she does. If this is deliberate, I hope we get a team that can show some good development and some moments to make us care for them as a unit.

Best Panel: I suppose we ought to be happy Diana is mule kicking Superman. Eleven issues in and we really not sure how they really view each other. Any shared time is better than none.

Wonder Woman #11 Review

Strife goes to regale Hera with Diana's exploits in Hell. Hera is not impressed and reveals she has struck a bargain with Apollo for the throne.  Strife is often portrayed as frivolous and just someone who enjoys the chaos but I wonder if she is just a spectator in all this. We get to meet other deities in this issue. One is Demeter and the other, Apollo's sister, Artemis.

There is a prophecy that the Gods will be beaten by one of their own.Is it Diana or Zola's child? In any case some Gods do not want that to happen.

Hermes, Diana, and Lennox are with Zola. Diana wants to protect her but she also wants her to at least be allowed to make a decison or two herself. It's a nice touch to see Diana's desire to not treat Zola like a helpless child or object. Hermes is very concerned about Zola too and they seem to have some underlying chemistry. Be a shame if Hermes turns out to be a double-crosser.

We have the inevitable confrontation with Apollo and Artemis who have come for Zola.It is a demi-goddess facing Gods. It is a tough battle. Artemis and Apollo are powerful and take down Lennox and Hermes easily. We learn Diana is only 23 years old. It is why Apollo spares her. Her youth equals indiscretion.

They get Zola and take her to Hera. In return for the throne.

But of course, we know Diana will not have any of that. She follows and challenges them in Hera's house.

I enjoyed this issue. We got new gods, we had humor, very good character moments, action, suspense and the story moving along at a nice pace while still this new world unfolds before us.

4.5 out of 5 stars.

Best Panel. Diana, Lennox and Hermes prepare for battle with Apollo and Artemis

Action Comics #11 Review

Superman is fighting in his t-shirt and jeans in his city. He takes down a Metalek, another alien that has shown up who seems to have the intention of conquest.

Inevitably in the battle property is destroyed and Superman helps rebuild homes in record time. Grant weaves in important things like Superman being accepted by people in need, or even feared by the likes of construction bosses who see him as competition. We also have the question of the value of the homes he builds. While it all seems insignificant against big robots and invasions, these are the human/moral aspects of being Superman that often get shoved aside. Superman no longer has the Clark persona to worry about because he has supposedly "died".

But he has taken on the persona of fire fighter, Johnny Clark. This allows him to be a "loner" while saving lives and going "home" to be Superman. It's weird to me no one looks at Johnny's face and not connect it to Superman. Are people really that oblivious? Does a beanie and no history really make a man that less recognizable?

Superman remains with doubts;whether he made the right decision by giving up on Clark. He asks Batman for help. We also see his naive idealism when Batman tells him to eradicate poverty in Somalia by selling the space station. It's pretty evident that our Superman needs to learn some tough lessons about what being Superman means. Batman is more worldy and experienced in this reboot but the World's Finest dynamic has clearly not been forgotten. Superman also seems to wear the armor and the jeans and t-shirt when the occasion calls for it.

We then cut to Lois and her niece, Suzie, who we learn is being tracked by the Blaker Farm ghost Lois had thought was Superman. Turns out he is a mutant with ESP powers and he is there to take Suzie while the earth faces extinction from the "Multitude." Of course Lois is in the thick of things and gets hit by an out of control fire engine and Superman will have to do the inevitable save Lois Lane next issue.

The back up was a nice little story how Clark came up with his everyman Superman outfit and the t-shirts.

I will give this issue 3.5 out of 5. It has some nice moments for our young and growing Superman but I am not sure about the Johnny Clark thing especially if he is going to suddenly go back to Clark in a few issues. The Lois in peril side-plot is oft trod but I get so tired of it.It's like his job in as much as fighting threats and helping people build.

Best Panel: Superman's almost shy look when he is clearly being adored by men and women.

Young Justice Superman and Wonder Woman

I will never get tired of this image.

Kingdom Come Superman and Wonder Woman

Artist Samuel Hunter has done some Kingdom Come art in animation style. Like most sm/ww fans Sam wishes to see an animated feature. But we know KC might be best in CGI and we don't trust the team, led by Bruce Timm to be faithful to the story expecially the sm/ww angle. This might be the closest we ever get to seeing anything like it. Darn DCAU! But bravo, Sam!
